QUEENS, N.Y., USA: New York State Sen. Tony Avella, Dr. Bernard Fialkoff and Patterson Dental presented Oral Health America’s “Fall for Smiles” campaign at a free oral health care event for 20 elementary-aged Queens children at the Ivy League Early Learning Academy of Bayside recently. Fialkoff is founder of the Fialkoff Dental Study Club, a dental educational group in Queens.
The Oral Health America organization encourages dentists nationally to participate in the Fall for Smiles program by providing free oral health care and information to their communities. Fialkoff encouraged all of his study club’s dentist members to do likewise at the group’s fall meeting. The event consisted of Fialkoff educating the children on proper oral health care, Eric Schmitz of Patterson Dental donating toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste to the children, and Sen. Avella instructing the children on the importance of maintaining dental health.
The event began with an introduction on the definition of some basic dental words like cavities and plaque. Fialkoff then spoke about proper nutrition and the effects of sugar on the teeth. He proceeded to teach the children how to brush correctly. The children gathered around Fialkoff, who showed a model of the human mouth and the sequence of how to brush teeth. At the end, Fialkoff and Sen. Avella gave out certificates to each student for having participated in the Fall for Smiles event.
Fialkoff said, “It is important to share the knowledge we have gained as adults with our children. They are the future generation and can be helped to avoid problems that we went through in our lives. As a doctor, one of our roles is to help our community, and that’s why I support the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology and Oral Health America initiatives. ”
