ARVADA, Colo., USA: Custom Milling Center (CMC) has announced the retirement of its founder, Robert Miller, who launched CMC in 2005 and led the company to become a leader in the dental laboratory supply and services industry, both as an outsourcing partner and a leader in advancing new technology.

Miller founded CMC to provide all laboratories with access to the most innovative production techniques as an outsourcing partner. CMC’s visionary business model allowed the company to remain on the leading edge of the dental industry’s increasingly intricate digital production methods. Instrumental in testing new materials and introducing them to laboratories nationwide, Miller made innovation a foundational value at CMC.

“Bob’s industry knowledge, technological foresight and business acumen was essential to establishing Custom Milling Center as an industry leader,” said Ryan Faufau, CMC director of production and technology. “His enthusiasm for the business and passion for continuous improvement have laid the foundation for CMC’s continued success.”

Miller’s expertise has enabled CMC to grow beyond providing milling services, to include technology sales and digital integration in partner labs, education and design services. Under his leadership, CMC grew to include a team of 43, and in 2011 became a subsidiary of Zahn, the dental laboratory business of Henry Schein Inc.

“It is Bob’s dedication to continuous innovation in milling products and services that has built CMC into a leader in its industry and a valued partner of dental laboratories across the country,” said Robert Gottlander, vice president, global prosthetic solutions, Henry Schein Inc. “Henry Schein and Zahn are committed to being the leader in providing its dental practices and dental laboratories with the latest digital dental solutions and the work of CMC is integral to these solutions. We look forward to Bob continuing to work with us as an advisor.”

The founding of CMC was the culmination of Miller’s four-decade career in the dental industry. Miller started his career as a Certified Dental Technician (CDT) and laboratory owner in Southern California and then transitioned to sales and management for dental suppliers Jelenko and Ivoclar-Williams. Combining his sales expertise with his knowledge of the dental industry, Miller founded Dental Technician’s Supply Company, which was eventually acquired by Darby Dental Lab Supply, where he served as general manager. While at Darby, Miller was responsible for the porcelain product, where he was instrumental in transforming Noritake from a little-known foreign porcelain into the ceramic of choice.

With Miller’s dedication to continuing education and innovation, he has maintained his CDT for four decades, and recently received a lifetime CDT award in Colorado.
