WIESBADEN, Germany/CHARLOTTE, NC, USA: The CEREC system is turning 25! From 26–28 August 2010, CAD/CAM enthusiasts and CEREC users will meet at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to celebrate this special birthday and share their knowledge and experiences. Renowned speakers will present their visions of the future of computerized dental restorations.

Currently, over 30,000 CAD/CAM systems have been installed worldwide. They are producing defect-oriented restorations chairside, in some cases, for already more than 25 years. Since 1985, more than 20 million all-ceramic CEREC restorations have been manufactured. Internationally published, well-cited studies from clinics and practices have accompanied the computerised treatment concept and demonstrated that the adhesively luted restorations possess a high survival probability (Kaplan-Meier curves) on a level that has otherwise only been attributed to metal-based restorations. Furthermore, economic efficiency calculations with data from health insurance companies have demonstrated the superiority of the chairside method over conventional approaches.

The 25th CEREC anniversary celebration is the perfect occasion to transparently present the gathered experience and prospective options of the system, and chart the course for intensifying the digital networking of practice and lab. New applications are now available that enable optoelectronic quadrant scans including antagonists, biogeneric occlusal surface design and online data exchange between the prosthodontist and the dental technician. In addition, CEREC connects with cone-beam CT and simplified diagnostics, planning, surgery and prosthetic build-up as part of implant insertion. These developments have made CEREC the global impetus for computerised dental reconstruction.

The organizers are convinced that this symposium will trigger further impulses for computer-aided, all-ceramic restorations in the practice and laboratory. The impression-free practice with its networking between chairside treatment and dental lab will continue to gain ground. On a continent where medical innovations are accepted and established faster than in the rest of the world, the speakers in Las Vegas will present evidence that the use of the CAD/CAM technique will soon be a standard in dentistry.
