AGD announces 2014-2015 executive committee

CHICAGO, Ill., USA: The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), a professional association of 38,000 general dentists dedicated to providing quality dental care and oral health education to the public, recently announced its new executive committee. The following leaders were elected and installed during the AGD 2014 Annual Meeting & Exhibits, held June 26 to 29, in Detroit.

President: W. Carter Brown, DMD, FAGD

A member of the AGD since 1985, Brown has served the organization in many different capacities, including as secretary/treasurer, Program Approval for Continuing Education approval officer, and webmaster for the South Carolina AGD. He also has been editor, delegate, vice chair, and trustee for AGD Region 19. Brown has authored articles for AGD Impact magazine, served on the AGD Communications Council, and presented at AGD Leadership Conferences. He also has served as chair of the AGD Strategic Planning Task Force, chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, and Board liaison to the AGD Communications and Legislative & Governmental Affairs councils.

President-Elect: W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD

A member of the AGD for 27 years, Donald has been active on both the local and national levels. Locally, he has served the Mississippi AGD as membership chair, vice president, president, and delegate to the AGD House of Delegates (HOD). Currently, he is the Mississippi AGD legislative chair. Nationally, he has served as the AGD vice president and speaker of the house. He also was the Region 12 regional director for six years, serving as chair of the regional directors for two years.

Vice President: Maria A. Smith, DMD, MAGD

Smith has served as a board member for the Connecticut AGD, as well as its president, and she also has represented her constituent as a delegate to the AGD HOD. Her involvement on the national level includes service on the AGD Membership and Constituent and Component Development councils. She also was a regional director for Region 1, serving as both vice chair and chair of the regional directors, and she represented Region 1 on the AGD Board, serving on the Budget and Finance Committee and as its chair. Most recently, she held the position of AGD treasurer.

Secretary: Manuel A. Cordero, DDS, MAGD

A member of the AGD since 1987, Cordero has been active on both the local and national levels. He has served the New Jersey AGD as a regional director and trustee, and he has held nearly every position on its board, including president in 2000. He also has represented the constituent as a delegate to the AGD HOD since 1991. Nationally, he was a member of the AGD’s first Staff Compensation Committee, and he currently serves as an AGD spokesperson.

Treasurer: Mohamed F. Harunani, DDS, MAGD

Harunani has been involved in the AGD since his first days in practice, holding various positions at the state and national levels. He has served the Illinois AGD in numerous roles, including as board member, secretary, treasurer, vice president, president, and delegate to the AGD HOD. Nationally, he has been a member of the AGD Investment Committee since 2004, and he has been the AGD representative to the American Dental Association (ADA) Standards Committee on Dental Informatics since 2005. He also served on the AGD Board from 2006 to 2011.

Speaker of the House: John C. Comisi, DDS, MAGD

An AGD member since 1984, Comisi has been involved with the organization on both the local and national levels. He has held many positions with the New York State AGD, including president, and he has served as a delegate or alternate delegate to the AGD HOD since 1991. Nationally, he is a member of the AGD’s IT Oversight Task Force, and he previously was a member of the Budget and Finance Committee and Group Benefits Council, as well as the chair of the AGD Internet Council. He also has served as a member or chair of many AGD Board committees during his tenure, and he currently is an AGD spokesperson.

Editor: Roger D. Winland, DDS, MS, MAGD

An AGD member since 1975, Winland has served as a member of the Legislative & Governmental Affairs Council and as chair of the Self-Assessment Committee. He also is a former president of the Ohio AGD and the Hocking Valley Dental Society. Before becoming the AGD editor, he was the editor of the Ohio AGD’s award-winning newsletter, The Family Dentist. Throughout his tenure, Winland has led the AGD editorial team in introducing a variety of digital content, including the AGD blog and podcast series; digital editions of the organization’s newsmagazine, AGD Impact, and peer-reviewed clinical journal, General Dentistry; and an AGD Impact mobile app.

Immediate Past President: Linda J. Edgar, DDS, MEd, MAGD

Edgar has been an AGD member for more than 20 years and served the association in numerous leadership roles. She has held every elected office for the Washington AGD and served as its executive director for four years. She also represented Region 11 on the AGD Board. During her tenure on the AGD Membership Council, Edgar developed a student transition manual and helped create an AGD constituent marketing program, which aids constituents with their local recruitment efforts. Because of this work, Edgar received the AGD’s Overall Recruitment Award in 2003.
