CHICAGO, Ill., USA: The ADA Foundation, in cooperation with the Academy of Operative Dentistry, is now accepting applications for the 2015 Dr. Ray Bowen Student Research Award. The application deadline is Dec. 5, 2014.
The biennial Dr. Ray Bowen Award is open to dental students at all levels who wish to undertake research relevant to contemporary operative dentistry. The award provides $6,000 to the awardee to perform the proposed research and an additional $1,000 to help meet the obligation to present a table clinic based on the research proposal at the Academy of Operative Dentistry’s scientific session. The student must have a research mentor who is a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry at his/her institution to provide guidance and act as a co-investigator.
“This student research award initiative is an amazing opportunity for dental students and residents wanting to take an active role in research and make a difference in the practice of operative and preventive dentistry,” said Ana Bedran-Russo, DDS, MS, PhD, associate professor and director of laboratory of applied dental biomaterials and interfaces at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry. “It also allows the ADA Foundation and the Academy of Operative Dentistry to foster students at the very early stages of their careers by providing mentorship and interactions with practitioners, academicians and other students at the Academy of Operative Dentistry Annual Meeting.”
“This is an important award for the ADA Foundation,” said Dr. David Whiston, president, ADA Foundation. “One of the most significant ways in which we contribute to the good of the profession, and ultimately to better patient care, is to identify and nurture future generations of researchers. The Dr. Ray Bowen Award is one of the first steps in that process. It is also a wonderful way to recognize the more than 50-year career of Dr. Bowen, whose work has improved dentistry, and who continues to serve as a role model for emerging researchers.”
From its inception in 2007 until 2011, the award was known as the George C. Paffenbarger Student Research Award. It was renamed in 2013 to honor the career of Bowen, the inventor of resin composites and dentin adhesives and an internationally recognized authority on composite materials.
Bowen is a former director of the ADA Foundation's Paffenbarger Research Center, renamed the Dr. Anthony Volpe Research Center (VRC) in 2013. Bowen is presently active as distinguished scientist at the VRC, located on the campus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md. The award is administered by the ADA Foundation in collaboration with the Academy of Operative Dentistry.
