CHICAGO, Ill., USA: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry board of trustees has canceled the AAPD 2020 Annual Session that had been scheduled for May 21–24 in Nashville, Tenn.

An announcement March 24 on the AAPD meeting website from AAPD president Dr. Kevin J. Donly and the AAPD board of trustees said the decision had been made with “heavy hearts.”

The announcement stated, in part: “… Your AAPD leadership based its analysis and decision-making on current recommendations and guidance from federal, state and local health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to unfold dramatically with increasing restrictions on travel and large gatherings, it has become apparent that the current state of national emergency has made it impossible to hold the 2020 Annual Session. AAPD is always committed to providing the high-quality educational content and social events that our attendees have come to expect. Given the circumstances described above, we cannot meet these expectations this year.”

According to the announcement, nearly 4,000 attendee registrations will need to be addressed, representing what was on track to be the largest annual session in the academy’s history. Those who booked housing through the AAPD registration site were advised that there was no need to cancel hotel reservations. According to the AAPD leadership’s announcement, Experient, AAPD’s official registration provider, will notify registrants of next steps.

Additionally, the announcement stated: “Please note that it may take up to 60 days for refunds to be initiated based on the volume of registrations to be processed. You will also be given the opportunity to donate your registration to the AAPD to help offset our significant financial loss resulting from cancellation of the Annual Session. We are advising that you cancel flights and that anyone who may have booked outside of our hotel block to cancel those reservations.”

AAPD 2021 is scheduled for Boston, from May 27-30.
