Philadelphia, Pa., USA: Movers and shakers from around the globe have met for the first Caries Management Pathways (CMP) conference hosted by Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry in Philadelphia. This international conference seeks to define a common language and new pathways for caries management.

Today dental caries is the most ubiquitous chronic disease in humans and is also the costliest dental and oral condition to treat. The current approach uses a “fill/no-fill paradigm” that is clearly falling short and must be replaced.

International representatives from academic institutions, the dental industry and medical insurance companies came together to hear scientific evidence in order to develop clinical recommendations that can be adjusted for local standards of care. The attendees’ presence here represents what is currently termed “transformational leadership,” which means those who take the lead in a specific area in order to effect a significant transformation.

The three-day CMP conference mixes a standard lecture format with breakout workshops where attendees will work in smaller groups to answer questions such as:

What are the needed end points for decision making for appropriate caries care?
What are the options for staging of the caries process?
What is the evidence and experience with each option?
Risk assessment: Can we achieve a consensus?

The fruits of these labors, a consensus among the representatives from different areas, will be used to draft the Caries Management Pathways document. It will be available for dissemination at subsequent national and international meetings in the fall, as well as available online.

The scientific evidence presented during the conference will be published in a unique publication, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, in national and international journals and throughout the Dental Tribune International network, which publishes 25 editions around the globe in 19 different languages and has a strong online presence at www.dental-tribune.com. This information will have open access throughout the “global dental village.”
