As restorative dentists, we carry ongoing responsibility not only for prosthetic design but also for occlusion, maintenance and long-term function. The question is not whether complications will occur. The real question is how predictably and conservatively they can be managed when they do. Complication management is not failure; it is part of responsible implant care.

How has digital dentistry changed the way you approach complication management?
Digital dentistry has fundamentally shifted our mindset. Instead of reacting to problems, we can now design more intentionally and diagnose earlier.

Digital workflows allow more precise planning and earlier identification of potential issues during treatment. For me, using tools such as DS Core, Primescan 2 and integrated implant solutions from Dentsply Sirona, among others has changed my approach to case planning. I feel more confident evaluating prosthetic space and visualising implant positioning in relation to the restorative design, and I can maintain digital records that support ongoing case assessment. The improved communication with laboratory partners that these tools facilitate also helps reduce remakes and inefficiencies. Ultimately, digital planning shifts the approach from reactive problem-solving to proactive risk management, supporting predictable and controlled outcomes.

You are a member of the Platform for Exchange of Experience, Research and Science (PEERS) implantology network, Dentsply Sirona’s platform for the exchange of experience, research and science. Its members comprise a broad range of clinicians who collaborate within PEERS through technically and clinically focused forums as well as strategic advisory boards. How does the platform contribute to advancing implant dentistry?
PEERS plays an important role in elevating the conversation around implant dentistry. It fosters interdisciplinary dialogue between surgeons, restorative dentists and laboratory technicians. Such engagement is critical, particularly in complex rehabilitation cases. Implant therapy is not provided in isolation. PEERS strongly emphasises prosthetically driven planning and evidence-based discussion rather than anecdotal experience. Being part of this community reinforces the importance of collaboration and long-term thinking.

If you had to summarise your philosophy on implant dentistry today, what would it be?
Implants are a tool, not a treatment plan. Biology must be respected first, biomechanics second and aesthetics third. Restorations should always be designed to be retrievable and maintainable. Long-term success depends less on the act of placement and far more on thoughtful planning, occlusion management and consistent follow-through. Ultimately, managing complications is not a sign of failure; it is part of practising responsible, advanced implant dentistry.
