PITTSBURGH, PA / NEW YORK, NY, USA: The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine faculty and staff often are honored by prestigious organizations for their achievements and exceptional leadership. Several individuals — Gayle Ball, Alexandra Jensen, Sherwin Matian, Jennifer Senge, Maria Martinez, Robert Weyant, Matthew Whipple and Mitesh Gandhi — are among those who recently have been recognized.

Gayle Ball, M.A., assistant professor of dental hygiene in the Department of Periodontics/Preventive Dentistry, was selected as one of the New Pittsburgh Courier’s 50 Women of Excellence. The award recognizes some of Pittsburgh’s most successful and influential African-American women for their commitment to professional excellence, as well as diversity and inclusion.

Alexandra Jensen, second-year predoctoral student, Sherwin Matian, fourth-year predoctoral student, and Jennifer Senge, fourth-year predoctoral student, are the latest students to become Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows. They join approximately 200 other Schweitzer Fellows across the country in conceptualizing and carrying out service projects that address the unmet health-related needs of underserved individuals and communities.

Maria Martinez, fourth-year predoctoral student, has been appointed to the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) Board of Trustees and also serves on the Council on Dental Education Licensure as an HDA representative. Martinez is the only student to serve on this national board.

Robert Weyant, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., M.S., associate dean of public health and outreach and professor and chair of the Department of Dental Public Health/Information Management, was appointed to an Institute of Medicine committee charged with reviewing the current oral health care system for the U.S. population. The committee, called An Oral Health Initiative, will review and make recommendations on ways to improve access to dental care. This 24-month project is sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration. Weyant is one of four dentists to serve on the committee.

Matthew Whipple, fourth-year predoctoral student, and Mitesh Gandhi, third-year predoctoral student, have been elected as Center Group Leaders for the 2010-11 term for the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Council of Students, Residents and Fellows. Whipple will serve as a regional representative for the Center for Educational Policy, and Gandhi will serve as a regional representative for the ADEA Center for Equity and Diversity.

Established in 1896 as an independent institution named the Pittsburgh Dental College, the School of Dental Medicine was incorporated into the University of Pittsburgh in 1905. The school offers a four-year Predoctoral Program leading to a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree, an International and Advanced Standing Program for graduates of foreign dental schools, and post-graduate residency programs in 10 disciplines.

The school of Dental Medicine offers the only dental hygiene certificate program in Pennsylvania affiliated with a major university, in addition to a dental hygiene baccalaureate degree program. The School of Dental Medicine’s comprehensive clinical offerings include the new Multidisciplinary Implant Center and the Center for Patients with Special Needs, one of the few centers in the U.S. dedicated to training future dentists to care for patients with disabilities. Recognized for excellence in research, the School of Dental medicine ranked 13th in National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research funding for fiscal year 2008.
