BOSTON, Mass., USA: In the days leading up to the 2015 Yankee Dental Congress, a snowstorm blanketed the Northeast with lots of white stuff. But that did not stop dental professionals from all over the region from descending upon the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center to take advantage of the many educational opportunities and product offerings the meeting had to offer.

The theme of this year’s event — the 40th anniversary dental congress in Boston — was “Beyond Expectations,” and, judging by the many offerings, organizers went above and beyond to deliver on that promise.

In the exhibit hall, more than 450 companies showcased the latest in dental equipment, services and technology. There were many product highlights on the show floor.

Among its many offerings, Shofu Dental Corp. was showcasing its new EyeSpecial C-II Digital Dental Camera. Designed exclusively for dentistry, it features 12 megapixels and eight shooting modes that are easier, faster and more reproducible. It is designed to ensure the best quality of images, according to the company.

Orascoptic was showing its new EyeZoom, the first and only loupe to offer adjustable levels of magnification ranging from 3x to 5x. Developed in conjunction with Konica Minolta, the loupe is designed to assist health-care professionals in viewing an operating site from multiple perspectives. EyeZoom conforms to fit the custom preference of each individual.

LM-Dental had its new ErgoMix Mini Implant Instruments. According to the company, the instruments are made of a softer-than-standard titanium alloy that is gentle on implants yet effective for calculus removal. ErgoMix implant instruments also feature replaceable tips and large-diameter silicone surfaced handles that are designed to improve comfort.

At Planmeca, attendees could check out the ProMax S3, which has an anatomically accurate extraoral bitewing program, made possible with patented SCARA (selectively compliant articulated robotic arm) technology. According to the company, these extraoral bitewings eliminate gagging and capture a greater number of surfaces for better caries detection versus intraoral modalities and are especially useful for periodontal patients, children, elderly patients, claustrophobic patients, patients with special needs, patients that gag or patients in pain.

Isolite Systems was showcasing its dental isolation systems, which are designed to deliver an isolated, humidity- and moisture-free working field as dry as the rubber dam but with significant advantages — including better visibility, greater access, improved patient safety and a leap forward in comfort. Plus, the company says, Isolite allows dentists to work in two quadrants at a time.

TAUB Products was offering its new ZERO-G Bio Implant Cement, a dual-cure implant cement recommended for intermediate to long-term cementation of implant-retained restorations. ZERO-G Bio Implant Cement works with all substrates and can also be used for traditional crown and bridge restorations, according to the company.

Many exhibitors had Super Bowl fever — there were footballs and game memorabilia on display. One company, Amazing Animation, was showcasing portraits of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Bill Lopa, the artist behind the portraits, was on hand, and attendees could meet him and see him at work.

Education on the show floor

In one of the many educational highlights at the 2015 Yankee Dental Congress, Dr. Charles Schlesinger presented “The Advantage of Osseous Fixation,” a lecture and live surgery. Attendees learned about osseous fixations and how implants can change the way they practice dentistry.

Stephanie Meyers, RD, presented “Fighting Cancer With Your Fork: Separating Fact From Fiction.”

Dr. Ron Kaminer presented several courses, including “Restorative Dentistry: Deciphering the New Material Dilemma,” “Tips and Tricks for Maximum Production” and “Biodynamic Dentistry.”

“Interprofessional Symposium: Complete Health Dentistry,” a new offering this year, featured an expert panel of physicians discussing management of patients with medical issues that dental professionals may encounter in daily practice.
