CHICAGO, Ill., USA: “A Midwinter Celebration” was the theme for the Chicago Dental Society’s sesquicentennial Midwinter Meeting, which took place Feb. 26 to 28 at McCormick Place West. Nearly 30,000 dental professionals were in attendance. In the exhibit hall, more than 700 companies showcased their products and services. Many introduced new technology or launched new corporate initiatives.

Among the companies launching product this year was Essential Dental Systems (EDS), with its Tango-Endo, a new endodontic system. With Tango-Endo, EDS says, it only takes two instruments to treat a root canal. The files allow for faster engagement with less resistance, according to EDS.

To help increase excitement for the Tango-Endo launch, EDS brought in tango dancers, who turned the exhibit hall floor into a dance floor.

Dental instrumentation company Brasseler USA, which recently introduced a new branding initiative, unveiled some of the components of its recent efforts, including an updated logo, at a reception held for members of the media.

The updated brand identity is being introduced gradually, but a newly designed trade show booth, as well as updated marketing materials, business cards and stationery, were already unveiled. The company’s tagline, “By Your Side,” embodies what sets the company apart, Brasseler said.

“Our tagline has been refined to broaden its meaning,” said Don Waters, president and CEO of Brasseler USA, in a press release. “‘By Your Side’ reflects our passion to support dentists in delivering predictable and consistent clinical results.”

In other news from Brasseler USA, the company has partnered with Ivoclar Vivadent to develop a specialized crown and bridge and veneer preparation system as well as a chairside finishing and polishing system specifically designed to work with Ivoclar Vivadent’s IPS e.max restorative material. The new systems are available to dental professionals exclusively through Brasseler USA.

Hu-Friedy Mfg. Co. introduced its IMS Infinity Series Cassettes for instrument management. According to the company, the cassettes are designed to support evolving instrument processing guidelines and to increase dental practice efficiency while protecting patients, staff and instrument investments.

“Hu-Friedy continues to lead the industry through innovation of dental instrument management systems that ensure better infection prevention while maximizing efficiency and ROI for the dental practice,” said Ken Serota, president of Hu-Friedy, in a press release.

Biolase introduced a “Practice Growth Guarantee” with the launch of its new WaterLase iPlus 2.0 all-tissue laser. WaterLase iPlus 2.0 also features the all-new SureFire YSGG Delivery System, plus a new periodontal app known as REPaiR for treating moderate to severe periodontitis according to the company.

Carestream Dental released its Logicon Caries Detector 5.1, designed to further automate the detection process and produce improved displays of caries sites, making exams and diagnoses even more efficient than in the past.

According to the company, Logicon 5.1 is the only commercially available FDA-approved computer-aided radiographic caries diagnosis software. It is a unique and clinically proven tool that helps practitioners detect and treat interproximal caries at an early stage, enabling minimally invasive treatments, the company says.

Sirona Dental launched its new SIDEXIS 4 software, which includes features such as a patient timeline and lightbox for gathering and displaying images. It sets a new standard in clinical diagnosis and patient care, according to the company.

Kerr Corp. unveiled Maxcem Elite, a new and improved resin cement, which boasts an up-to-90-percent higher bond strength to dentin than the previous formula. It features “One-Peel” cleanup, it requires no hand mixing, and there is no need for refrigeration, according to the company.

Educational opportunities

Every year, the scientific program at the Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting is considered to be among the most comprehensive there is, with virtually every aspect of modern dentistry covered from numerous angles. But it was not just in the classrooms where the latest tools and techniques were explored. The exhibit hall, too, abounded in educational opportunities, with more than 600 exhibitors eager to take advantage of face-to-face opportunities to educate dental professionals about their offerings.

Whether it was one-on-one or in group presentations — as Keystone Industries was doing in its booth — in-depth discussions about some of the most sophisticated offerings in health care were taking place in every aisle.

Attendees, whether specialists, general dentists, hygienists or assistants, could get an independent, one-on-one assessment of ergonomic habits at Pelton & Crane, which was sponsoring a clinic, staffed by local physical therapists who specialize in ergonomics in work environments such as dental practices.

Dental chairs, seats and stool were all on hand, so the pros could take a look at how one typically works and offer some input that just might prolong a career.

Also at the meeting, attendees could enjoy a complimentary 150th birthday cake pop in recognition of the meeting’s anniversary. The cake pops were flying off the tables as soon as they were set out.
