The City of São Paulo, Brazil, had the rare privilege of meeting the first female chair of the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM), the largest dental congress in the US.

Dr. Lorna Flamer-Caldera, new chair of GNYDM, traveled all the way from New York City to attend the 43rd edition of CIOSP, the largest dental congress and exhibition in Latin America, which takes place at the Expo Center Norte in São Paulo and is organized by the Asociación Paulista de Cirujanos Dentistas (APCD).

Dr. Flamer-Caldera networked with the top brass of Brazilian dentistry, as well as with the organizers of this large event, such as APCD President, Dr. Wilson Chediek, and APCD National Chair, Dr. Silvio Jorge Cecchetto.

Dr. Flamer-Caldera, who has an extensive and brilliant career in dentistry, is not only the first woman to be elected Chair of GNYDM, but also the first African-American woman to do so. She has an extensive list of professional achievements, and has vowed to work with regional dental associations to increase clinical and networking opportunities between American and Latin American dentists.

Dr. Flamer-Caldera is recognized for her contributions to dental education. She served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene, New York City College of Technology, CUNY lecturing in pharmacology, emergency management, and nitrous oxide sedation and currently lectures on these topics internationally. She has also participated in ethics programs at New York University College of Dentistry and Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Community outreach has been an integral part of Dr. Flamer-Caldera’s mission throughout her career. She has produced outreach lecture series focused on the impact of cultural/lifestyle conditioning on oral care decisions and appeared on Trinity Broadcasting Networks to present “Oral Health for All Ages.” Her series presentation redirecting oral health awareness “from crisis care to preventive care,” and “Generational Wellness: Family Strategies for Oral Health” were well received.

Beginning in 2018, Dr. Flamer-Caldera has served on the Organization Committee of the GNYDM, the nation's largest dental congress. In that role she has chaired multiple committees and served as a troubleshooter. Dr. Flamer-Caldera is the 2026 and 2027 General Chair of the GNYDM and in that role provides its overall leadership, vision and strategic direction.

Dr. Flamer-Caldera maintains a private practice in restorative and cosmetic dentistry for over 30 years, applying her many years of experience and training as an artist to enhancing and elevating oral care.
