SCOTTSDALE, AZ: The College of Health Sciences and the School of Oral Health Science, University of Technology, Jamaica, in conjunction with the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the Ministry of Health, Jamaica, presented a hands-on dental implant conference and continuing education program called “Implants in Paradise,” in Montego Bay.

Held at Cornwall Regional Hospital, the course was the third cooperative effort of the Jamaican Ministry of Health and the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics.

The six-day course was the fulfillment of a vision to establish a training program in oral implantology in Montego Bay, with the pristine Jamaican white sand beaches providing the recreational backdrop. Drs Leonard I. Linkow and Sheldon Winkler presented a series of lectures, and clinical treatment was performed under the supervision of Dr Mike Shulman.

The conference began with an induction ceremony where Linkow and Winkler were conferred as adjunct professors, and Shulman was named an adjunct associate professor in the School of Oral Health Sciences, University of Technology, Jamaica. The Hon. Errol Morrison, president of the University of Technology, Dr Irving Fitzgodfrey McKenzie, interim dean of the School of Oral Health Sciences, and Dr Winston E. Grey, adjunct associate professor at the School of Oral Health Sciences, were named honorary fellows of the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics.

In attendance at the ceremony were the first year DMD students from the School of Oral Health Sciences. Participating in the hands-on course were clinicians from the United States, India, Thailand, Myanmar and 10 local Jamaican dentists. During the course, the participants placed 19 implants in 12 patients, performed five sinus-lift procedures, placed abutments and temporary restorations and continued restorative treatment for patients who had implant surgery performed during the previous two courses.

Linkow developed and introduced numerous implant systems, many of which are in use today throughout the world. In 1992, New York University created the first and only endowed chair in implantology in perpetuity with Linkow as the recipient. Linkow is considered by many of his colleagues as the “Father of Oral Implantology.” He is clinical professor of implant dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. He has authored 14 textbooks and almost 200 articles and guest chapters in professional journals and textbooks. Linkow is currently honorary president of the AAIP.

Winkler is adjunct professor at the School of Dental Medicine, Midwestern University, Glendale, Ariz. He previously served as professor and chairperson of the department of prosthodontics and dean of advanced education, research and continuing education at Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, Pa. Winkler has authored or co-authored six textbooks (including “Essentials of Complete Denture Prosthodontics”), approximately 185 articles and chapters in professional journals and textbooks and founded the journal Implant Dentistry, which he edited for six years. Winkler is currently senior editor of the Journal of Oral Implantology.

Founded by Dr Maurice J. Fagan Jr., in 1982 at the School of Dentistry, Medical College of Georgia, the objective of the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics is to support and foster the practice of implant prosthodontics as an integral component of dentistry.

The academy supports component and affiliate implant associations around the world, including organizations in Egypt, France, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Israel, Italy, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, South Korea and Thailand.

The academy has published two textbooks, “The Dental Implant” in 1985 and “Implant Prosthodontics” in 1990. The Journal of Oral Implantology is the official publication of the academy. The academy also publishes a newsletter.

The academy holds an annual convention, international meetings in cooperation with its affiliate and component societies, offers continuing education courses and sponsors a network of study clubs in the United States.

The American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics is designated an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by AGD for fellowship, mastership and membership maintenance credit. The current term of approval extends through Dec. 31, 2013.

Officers of the academy are Winkler, Scottsdale, Ariz., president; Dr Harold F. Morris, Canton, Mich., president-elect; Dr Peter A. Neff, N. Palm Beach, Fla., vice president; Dr Robert Wood, Philadelphia, Pa., secretary; and Dr James Fagan, III, Atlanta, treasurer. Dr M. Joe Mehranfar, Scottsdale, Ariz., is general chairperson of the 2011 annual meeting.

In a letter to the academy after the joint program, which was held Jan. 16–21, McKenzie, interim dean of the School of Oral Health Sciences, wrote, “On behalf of the University of Technology, Jamaica, and the people of Jamaica, I wish to express sincere gratitude to the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics for this priceless act of kindness and humanitarianism that has exceeded our every expectation.”
