LEIPZIG, Germany: Conventionally, dental hygiene practices have primarily focused on the removal of biofilm from tooth surfaces to reduce the incidence of caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease. In an upcoming free Dental Tribune Study Club webinar on Friday, 17 March, an expert will outline the importance of professional tongue cleaning in oral health coaching given the widespread prevalence of halitosis and the associated negative effects it can hold for sufferers.

A range of studies have demonstrated that halitosis is present in roughly 25 per cent of dental patients. Quirynen et al. found in a 2009 study that the cause of this condition was in the oral cavity for 75.9 per cent of participants with halitosis, with the majority of cases caused by bacteria products coating the tongue. In the webinar, Prof. Georg Gassmann will demonstrate the clinical application of the TS1 tongue sanitizer (TSpro), a new suction attachment that fits on to the saliva ejector in order to remove bacterial tongue coatings within 1 minute.

Gassmann is the Professor of Dental Hygiene and Prevention Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne in Germany and director of the academic programme in these two fields. Additionally, he lectures internationally on periodontics in curricula and training courses.

The 1-hour webinar, titled “Tongue cleaning as an integrated feature within individual oral health coaching (IMC)”, will be broadcast live on Friday, 17 March, from 3 p.m. CET. Attendance is free of charge after easy registration on the website. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic discussed.
