Meeting review: 2019 Pacific Dental Congress in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, CANADA: The 2019 Pacific Dental Conference was held March 7 to 9 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The dental industry’s latest advancements, engaging sessions and fun with fellow professionals filled the days. The meeting is considered one of the largest dental conferences in North America.

The event featured a comprehensive agenda of more than 200 open sessions and hands-on courses presented by some of dentistry’s top clinicians and thought leaders. The program enabled attendees to earn up to 20 C.E. credits.

The Live Dentistry Stage was located on the west side of the Exhibit Hall. It was sponsored by A-dec and Sinclair, and each session also had cosponsors. This year marked the 10th season of live dentistry at the Pacific Dental Conference.

There were many offerings. Warren Roberts, DMD, performed “EMG Guided Botulinum Toxin Therapy for TMD,” cosponsored by the Pacific Training Institute for Facial Aesthetics. Ho-Young Chung, DDS, and Dmitriy Ivanov, DDS, performed “Surgical Options for Peri-Implantitis and Other Implant Complications.” Michael Layton, DDS, and David Dana, DDS, Prosthodontist, performed “Technological Advancements in Orthodontics and Indirect Bonding.”

In addition, Peter Walford, DDS, FCARDP, performed “Building Teeth Using Composite, Bulk Fill and Fibers.” Sonia Leziy, DDS, Dipl Perio, FCDS(BC), FRCD(C), performed “Palatal Tissue vs. Dermal Graft Substitutes for Root Coverage,” cosponsored by BioHorizons Canada and ProNorth Medical Corp. Mark Kwon, DMD, and Bernard Jin, DMD, performed “Socket Shield: New Approach to Esthetic Implant Therapy,” cosponsored by the BITES Institute.

On the show floor, Align Technology booth allowed meeting attendees to see the ITero Element 5D in action. It’s the first 3-D intraoral scanner with NIRI technology. The booth also had a number of mini-classes being presented by top practitioners.

Meeting attendees could also see how Navident 2.1 by ClaroNav can enable any instrument to be used with precision guidance — simplifying protocols, increasing accuracy and improving outcomes.

Dentsply Sirona displayed its Primescan, and it presented short education sessions on it every half hour. The company reports that the intraoral scanner is capable of deeper and more precise imaging thanks to high-resolution sensors and shortwave light that capture up to one million 3-D points per second. The resulting high-resolution 3-D digital impressions can be intuitively manipulated on a touch screen to improve patient acceptance and achieve high-quality outcomes whether in house or with a lab.

DiaDent presented its DiaPaste premixed calcium hydroxide paste with barium sulfate root-canal treatment. It’s premixed, stable, flexible, highly radiopaque antibacterial, biocompatible — and easy to remove because it’s water soluble.

In the SciCan booth, you could check out the STATCLAVE G4 chamber autoclave. Its 11-inch chamber and vacuum-assisted closed-door drying can deliver sterilized-and-dried wrapped instruments in as little as 38 minutes.

In the Shofu booth, you could quickly see how the EyeSpecial C-III dental camera can save you and your staff all sorts of time and supplies. Because it’s designed specifically for dentistry, it’s easy for any team member to quickly master and quickly produces the results needed for the specific patient and procedure.

At the Designs for Vision booth, you could check out the high-definition, ultra-lightweight headlights that brightly illuminate the entire oral cavity.

On Saturday, the Dental Technicians Association of British Columbia held its annual conference in conjunction with the annual PDC Lab Expo. The Dental Technical Association conference opened with a keynote address from author, radio host and social entrepreneur Stephanie Staples, CSP, who presented “Bring Your ‘A’ Game to Work & Life.”

Concurrent educational sessions ran throughout the day. Known as Western Canada’s largest dental technology tradeshow, the PDC Lab Expo brings together dental technicians and dentists to exchange information and forge new business relationships with some of the industry’s top companies. On display were some of the latest tools, technology, techniques and other advancements. All registered PDC attendees also had access to the PDC Lab Expo. Dentists and their teams were invited to join the more than 3,000 dental technicians and denturists to explore the new options and technologies together.

The ability to network with the more than 14,000 dental professionals that attend the PDC isn’t limited to the courses and Exhibit Hall. Many dental-school graduating classes held their annual reunions at the meeting, and there were numerous other socializing opportunities, including “De La Vigne — French Wines Explored” and “PDC After Hours.”

“De la Vigne — French Wines Explored,” with David Lancelot’s wine selections, featured a selection from the northern region of France’s Loire Valley through Burgundy, down to the Rhone Valley and west to Bordeaux.

“PDC After Hours” was Friday night at Vancouver’s legendary Commodore Ballroom, with the Famous Players Band.
