ATLANTA, GA, USA: The Hinman Dental Society awarded scholarships and gifts totaling more than $250,000 to 92 dental, dental hygiene, laboratory technician and dental assisting students at 37 colleges and universities, as well as dental education groups and clinics. The students selected for scholarships were named “Hinman Scholars” and were recognized during a luncheon at the 100th Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting on Saturday, March 24.

“For the past 25 years, Hinman has been supporting student programs in the Southeast,” said Dr. Allen French, general chairman of the 2012 meeting. “In fact, in the past 12 years alone, the Hinman Dental Society has contributed over $5.4 million in scholarships and large gifts in support of dental education.”

“In addition to providing scholarships and endowments, Hinman invites students to the meeting to learn more about continuing education opportunities available to them, even before they are practicing dentistry,” French said.

The Hinman Dental Society has granted scholarships to dental students since 1986, adding dental hygiene students in 1989, laboratory technician students in 2003 and dental assisting students in 2005. Recipients are selected by the dean of each school’s dentistry, dental hygiene, laboratory technician and dental assisting departments and must be junior student members of the American Dental Association, as well as in the top 10 percent of their class.
