BRISBANE, Australia: With dental implants set to become an increasingly common treatment option for edentulous patients in the future, regular maintenance will be imperative to ensure implant functionality and to prevent biological complications. At the recent 2019 International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH), Dr Tihana Divnic-Resnik delivered an engaging presentation titled “The role of chemical biofilm control in prevention of periodontitis and peri-implant disease” in a session sponsored by Swiss oral health company Curaden.

Having previously lectured on the topics of periodontics and oral medicine at the University of Belgrade in Serbia, Divnic-Resnik is currently a clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Dentistry. Her presentation at the ISDH, which was held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 15 to 17 August, provided attendees with an evidence-based understanding of the role of oral antiseptics in the prevention and maintenance of patients with implant-supported restorations. “We are aware that mechanical biofilm control is the first line of prevention against the most common oral diseases, such as caries and periodontal diseases,” she said. “It’s important to remember, though, that this might not always be enough, owing to factors such as low patient motivation, low dexterity or a unique situation in the oral cavity. A so-called ‘chemical toothbrush’ might thus be of assistance in such situations as an adjunct to mechanical biofilm control,” she added.

Divnic-Resnik explained how chemical biofilm control through the use of chlorhexidine has been considered to be the gold standard, able to be used in primary and secondary prevention of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, and also during or after non-surgical or surgical periodontal therapy.

“Chlorhexidine is a well-documented and effective antiseptic,” Divnic-Resnik said. “However, its potential adverse effects, such as tooth staining, taste alterations and irritation of the oral mucosa, are shown to be mostly related to its concentration. Such undesirable reactions have resulted in calls for modified clinical practice and exploration of alternative substances for oral care.”

Divnic-Resnik highlighted Curaden’s CURAPROX Perio Plus+ as a potential way forward. The new oral antiseptic range combines chlorhexidine with Citrox, a natural antibacterial agent derived from bitter oranges, as well as the naturally occurring antiseptic polylysine, to reduce the concentration of chlorhexidine.

“Used in combination with chlorhexidine in Perio Plus+, Citrox demonstrates strong synergistic activity, which may warrant use of lower concentrations of chlorhexidine in oral health products and thus subsequently reduce its adverse effects,” she said.
