ESSEN, Germany: The global design scene will honour the best designers and manufacturers of this year with the Red Dot Award: Product Design on 9 July. During the Red Dot Gala, the winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best will accept their trophies on stage at the Essen opera house. Among the products to receive a Red Dot are the DreamWear mask, C-U2 camera, Vinyl 3-D, E3 and TRIOS 3 Wireless scanners, and VITA SMART.FIRE furnace.

This year, companies and designers from 59 countries entered more than 6,300 innovations in the Red Dot Award: Product Design and 1,684 received the Red Dot for good design quality. A total of 69 entries won the top award in the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best. Among the winners of the Red Dot, awarded for works that convinced the jury with their high design standards, were six products from five dental companies.

The Philips DreamWear full-face continuous positive airway pressure mask is worn by patients suffering from sleep apnoea. It has airflow through the frame, and a connection at the top of the head with a 360° swivel to allow users to sleep in any position and roll over freely. The hybrid cradle cushion seals over the nose and mouth, offering the same comfort and performance as a conventional full-face pillow mask at a fraction of the size.

The C-U2 camera, developed by CEFLA, captures high-resolution images of the mouth cavity during a dental examination. Its flat tip and wide-angle lens enable imaging even of third molars. With the touch-sensitive slider, images can be captured and enlarged using the digital zoom, while the back-lit ring on the handpiece ensures that the user is aware of the camera’s operational status at all times. The add-on Macro Cap allows optical enlargement to visualise microfractures.

Manufactured by smart optics Sensortechnik, the Vinyl 3-D scanner for dental laboratories provides considerable workspace with its 180° opening. Users can decide whether they wish to scan with an open or closed lid. The improved motor control automatically guides the object to be scanned into the measuring field smoothly and quickly. The non-slip rubber mat on the system plate, which is reminiscent of a turntable, provides stability.

The design of 3Shape’s E3 scanner, which allows the scanning of an impression directly, reflects the physical movement of the scanner. The device recognises when a new object is inserted and automatically starts scanning. The object to be scanned is placed into visual focus by positioning on a small hemisphere platform that rotates along two axes.

The 3Shape TRIOS 3 Wireless intra-oral dental scanner connects by Wi-Fi to the computer, displaying the scan in real time. The removable, sterilisable scan tip ensures quick and hygienic treatment. The charging station can simultaneously accommodate three rechargeable batteries, which guarantees uninterrupted performance. The ergonomic scanner is available in two versions—with a pen or handle grip.

Produced by VITA Zahnfabrik, VITA SMART.FIRE is a furnace for dental ceramics specifically developed for practices. The material can be selected and the process launched in just one step, controlled from the dedicated tablet computer. Owing to its compact dimensions, the firing unit is particularly space-saving and easily installed in any practice. The upper LED ring provides a colourful accent and serves as a 360° status indicator during the firing process.

The award ceremony will host 1,200 international guests at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. The after-show party at the Red Dot Design Museum is also the opening of the “Design on Stage—Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018” special exhibition. This will showcase the award-winning innovations for four weeks as part of the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design.
